Diet for cystic fibrosis patients

Cystic fibrosis is a disorder where not only does the mucus thickens and clog the normal functioning of the lungs, but it also obstructs the activity of tubes carrying digestive enzymes. These enzymes help in metabolism and the functioning of the pancreas, affecting the normal digestion process in turn.

A person suffering from cystic fibrosis should be on a high-nutrient diet that gives importance to various food groups. Enlisted below are a few groups of nutrients especially required by cystic fibrosis patients.

1. Starchy foods
Carbohydrates are an essential part of the cystic fibrosis-diet as individuals with the condition require much more energy than normal.

  • At least one portion of starchy food should be included in every meal. Potatoes, bread, cereals, rice, and pasta are all foods that must be had by people who have cystic fibrosis.
  • Consume dishes that have a high content of meat and cheese sauces. Lasagna is a prime example of this type of dish.
  • Snack on cereal, toast, and sandwiches

2. Protein-rich foods
Proteins are required for bodybuilding and are an important source of energy. Teenagers and children suffering from cystic fibrosis especially need additional protein. The daily intake of food should include at least 2 servings of one of the following:

  • Lean meat
  • Eggs
  • Soy
  • Nuts, etc

3. Iron
Iron is an important mineral that keeps the body’s immune system in good condition. It is essential for maintaining the hemoglobin content in the blood. Lower levels of hemoglobin lead to low energy levels in the body. For those with cystic fibrosis, it is important to include iron-rich foods in their daily diet, as they are generally weak and are prone to infections. These are:

  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Fortified cereals
  • Liver

4. Zinc
Zinc is a nutrient necessary for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients from food. As cystic fibrosis clogs the digestive tracts, inhibiting the action of enzymes, zinc should be an important part of the diet to improve digestion. Some zinc-rich foods are:

  • Nuts and seeds
  • Legumes
  • Whole grains
  • Eggs

5. Calcium
An additional boost of calcium is required if one suffers from cystic fibrosis as patients may be prone to ailments such as weakening of bones and resulting osteoporosis. This can be gotten from high-fat milk, yogurt, cheese, and certain fruits. It can also be gotten from calcium supplements. This can offset the ailments caused by a calcium deficiency.

6. Salt
A symptom of cystic fibrosis is the heavy loss of salt while sweating, and this loss is higher in the summer. Salty foods are to be added to the diet of cystic fibrosis patients to help make up for this loss. One can also add more salt to cooked foods and salads.

Being affected by cystic fibrosis does not mean the end of the world. In spite of the degenerating symptoms of the disease, the patient can lead a normal life, provided adequate dietary and lifestyle changes are made.
